Over the past several weeks, Simone Biles was making headlines for her impeccable skills and accomplishments during the 2016 Rio Olympics; but now, the star is making headlines, all thanks to her leaked medical records.
A group of Russian hackers, who call themselves Fancy Bears, tapped into the World Anti-Doping Agency’s athlete database and obtained and then published Biles’ records, which showed that the Olympic athlete was granted medical exemptions to use banned drugs.
In response to the leaked records, Biles confirmed via Twitter that she has ADHD and has taken medication since she was a child. She wrote, “Please know, I believe in clean sport, have always followed the rules, and will continue to do so as fair play is critical to sport and is very important to me.”
Biles wasn’t the only athlete whose medical information was leaked. The hackers got their hands on the records of famous sisters Venus and Serena Williams. The information alleges that Serena was granted permission to use drugs to treat muscle injuries, such as anti-inflammatories.
WADA released a statement that read: “WADA deeply regrets this situation and is very conscious of the threat that it represents to athletes whose confidential information has been divulged through this criminal act.”
