Surprise! Beyonce is a Fashion Icon.
It’s an honor that is usually announced weeks beforehand, but this year at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony, it wasn’t revealed that Queen Bey had won the prestigious prize until it was time to announce the award at the very end of the night. In front of a crowd full of fashion designers, celebrities and more, Diane von Furstenberg took the stage to introduce Beyoncé, saying she represented everything women aspire to be. “The image of a woman in charge has never looked more glamorous,” DVF stated.
When the “Lemonade” singer hit the stage to accept her award she spoke about how her mother was the driving force behind the many color coordinated ensembles of Destiny’s Child.
“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life. When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black, country curvy girls. And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother … used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.”
That night also included tributes to David Bowie and Prince. Tilda Swinton honored her friend Bowie with a heartfelt letter and Jennifer Hudson sang the Prince song “Let’s Go Crazy” to pay homage to the Purple One.
Other big winners at the CDFA included Marc Jacobs for womenswear designer of the year, Norma Kamali received the lifetime achievement award and Donna Karan was honored with the Founder’s Award.
