New information is starting to unfold about 29-year-old Omar Mateen, the man who shot and killed 49 people inside Orlando’s Pulse nightclub over the weekend. Here are five new things we are learning about Mateen, the killer who pledged allegiance to Isis during the shooting.
Reportedly Gay: In a shocking turn of news, it’s being reported that Omar had profiles on several gay websites and apps, including Grindr. What makes this piece of information so shocking is that according to the killer’s family, the massacre was set off by anti-gay hatred.
According to an ex-classmate, who wanted to remain anonymous, Mateen was gay in “2006” but had not come out. Its also been confirmed that the suspect, who died in crossfire with police, had been to Pulse nightclub several times.
Had Plans To Kill More: It’s being speculated that Mateen planned to carry out attacks at a Disney entertainment and shopping complex. Apparently, the 29-year-old conducted surveillance trips between the club and Disney Springs between June 1 and June 6, the same day Gay Days 2016 was taking place at Disney World and other locations around the city.
Married With a Kid: Omar lived in Fort Pierce Florida with his second wife, Noor Salman. Matinee had a 3-year-old son as well. Salman apparently knew about the attack and tried to talk him out of it. According to reports, Omar’s wife was with him when he purchased ammunition and a holster. She also revealed to the FBI that she drove Mateen to Pulse at some point over the past two weeks so he could scope out the place. Salman could be charged for knowing information prior to the egregious attacks.
He Laughed While Opening Fire: Witnesses say while opening fire inside the popular gay nightclub, Mateen literally laughed. Norman Casiano, 26, was shot four times during initial attacks and witnessed the man laughing while killing a man who had already been shot several times.
“The scary part was that he didn’t say anything, and what’s scarier than that when he shot the boy that was already shot, he laughed and as he’s laughing that’s when he fires through the whole front of the stall,” Mr Casiano told Local 10 News.
He continued, “We’re yelling at him, being like ‘please, please don’t do this, you don’t want to do this, just spare us, we didn’t see you, we can’t tell anybody’, I guess that enticed him more.
“He put his gun over the stall and willy-nilly fired and that’s when I got (shot on) this side,” he said. “I just heard him laugh, then he disappeared into the other room and kept going.”
Hated Women and Black People: According to Daniel Gilroy, a co-worker at G4S Secure Solutions where Mateen worked, there were three things that pushed the killer’s buttons: Race, relegation and gender: “He always referred to every other race, religion, gender in a derogatory way,” Gilroy said. “He did not like black people at all. That was mentioned once or twice, but more so was women. He did not like women at all. He did like women in a sexual way, but he did not respect them.”
He added, “He was scary in a concerning way … And it wasn’t at times. It was all the time. He had anger management issues. Something would set him off, but the things that would set him off were always women, race or religion. [Those were] his button pushers.”
