Will Smith was one of several actors of color overlooked during this year’s Academy Awards, but giving credit where credit is due, it’s the MTV Movie Awards that will honor the actor with the Generation Award.

Over the past two decades, Smith has delivered classic hits like Bad Boys, Independence Day and Men in Black. The actor has been a force to be reckoned with in the film industry and will be honored for his pure talent and success.

“Will Smith and MTV have grown up together and share a very cool history,” Executive Producer Casey Patterson said in a statement about the star, who is currently filming Collateral Beauty.

“MTV was a part of every phase of Will’s career and he has been a huge part of what defined the MTV culture from the beginning,” Patterson explained. “From TV’s The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, to his music and amazing movies, Will is the voice of a generation and not afraid to use it. The 25th anniversary of the Movie Awards is the perfect year to honor #BIGWILLIE as only MTV can—with lots of big surprises in store.”

Not only will Will be honored, but the rapper turned actor is also nominated for Best Male Performance and the True Story Award for his role in Concussion.

Side note: We can only assume Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith won’t be boycotting this one.

The award show, hosted by Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, airs on April 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
