Surprise, surprise, T.I. has scored a role in the upcoming “Roots” reboot.
The HISTORY channel has taken on the task of retelling the classic “Roots” story for a new generation. This time, instead of starring in it, Lavar Burton is set to Co-Executive produce the project he says, “is needed more than ever.”
Alongside T.I., who plays Cyrus, the all-star cast includes Forest Whitaker (“Fiddler”), Anna Paquin (“Nancy Holt”), Laurence Fishburne (“Alex Haley”), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“Tom Lea”), Anika Noni Rose (“Kizzy”), Mekhi Phifer (“Jerusalem”) and introduces Malachi Kirby (“Kunta Kinte”).
“’Roots’ will allow new audiences to experience this epic family saga with a new vision that is both incredibly inspiring and tremendously entertaining,” said Paul Buccieri, President of A&E and HISTORY. “We are proud that HISTORY will be able to bring new life to this incredible story that remains as important today as it did when the original ‘Roots’ first premiered.”
HISTORY® premieres “Roots” on Memorial Day 2016, airing over four consecutive nights at 9 p.m. beginning Monday, May 30. Check out the trailer below.
