While Hollywood is experiencing a crisis regarding diversity in casting following the Oscar nominations, Alfre Woodard was celebrating women of color at her 7th Annual Oscar’s Sistahs Soiree. HipHollywood was inside the swanky affair held inside the Vivienne Westwood Penthouse at The London Hotel, where Woodard once again pulled out all the stops teaming with Tanqueray No. Ten and Perennial Sports and Entertainment.
“These women all want to be together so much and they look forward to this day,” explained Woodard of planning for the event. “So whatever happens it doesn’t matter because it’s ours, so it’s always good.”
Woodard hosts the event yearly to salute women who have been nominated for an Oscar, and women who in a “perfect world” as she puts it, should have been nominated. “We’ve been having this diversity conversation for a long time, we’re not going to stop having it for a long time,” said The Talk host Aisha Tyler. “I always want people to know when I talk about diversity, I want Black women to work, I want Asian women to work, Latino women to work and not just in front of the camera, behind the camera.”
“The problem is bigger than the awards,” added Jurnee Smollett-Bell who’ll next be seen on the WGN series Underground. “It’s not effective to just focus on the awards, we have to prevent the situation from happening by focusing on a solution. The solution is putting pressure on these writers and directors to cast more diverse roles.”
Loretta Devine, Yolonda Ross, Rosario Dawson, Anika Noni Rose and CCH Pounder were also in attendance and shared their love for the event. Check it out in the video above!
