There are a host of White singers that have been very successful at singing soul music and garnering quite the fan base — Sam Smith, Adele, Justin Timberlake — just to name a few. But when Black singers sing the music that they connect with, they are often left with lukewarm reviews and lower album sales — Jazmine Sullivan, Anthony Hamilton, Chrisette Michele — again, just to name a few.

In an interview with HipHollywood, Chrisette is speaking out about White artist singing “Black music” and giving her honest opinion on the whole situation. “When someone’s eating spaghetti it’s always Italian food, but when people sing Black music all of sudden it’s White music. It’s like whoa wait a second! That’s totally soul,” the Rich Hipster singer exclaimed.

But don’t confuse her statement with shade. Michele went on to say, “Do I like their music? Absolutely. But do I wonder how come we don’t get the same recognition when we create the same type of music? I do wonder.” The soul singer’s solution is simple, “We have to come together and lift each other up.”
