Black Twitter is understandably up in arms over news that White actor Joseph Fiennes has been cast to play Michael Jackson in an upcoming film. Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon is a project centered around a post 9/11 road trip the pop icon took with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando.
Fiennes tells Entertainment Tonight he understands the outrage over the announcement. “I’m a white, middle-class guy from London. I’m as shocked as you may be.” Still, the American Horror Story actor thinks he’s a good fit for the role because of his skin color resembles Jackson’s more than another actor’s might. “[Jackson] definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue — and that’s something I do believe. He was probably closer to my color than his original color.”
OK, buddy. Point taken, but definitely not accepted by a lot of folks who decried the casting on Twitter:
Too crazy for words! #JosephFiennes playing Michael Jackson! What next? Tom Cruise playing Muhammad Ali? Uma Thurman playing Rosa Parks?

So @idriselba can’t be Bond, but Joseph Fiennes is Michael Jackson? Ok Hollywood.

The most mind-numbingly dumb string of words ever made into a sentence: “Joseph Fiennes to play Michael Jackson in 9/11 road trip drama.”

What do you think of Fiennes landing the role? Is this just another example of clueless filmmakers and producers completely disregarding common sense when casting films or is Fiennes actually a fair casting?
