Exclusive: ‘Ebony’ Power 100 Attendees React To San Bernardino Mass Shooting

Just hours after two gunmen opened fire inside the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, African American power players stepped onto the red carpet for Ebony magazine’s 30th Annual Power 100 Gala; thus making the evening very bitter sweet.

As people arrived to the event, which was to salute the achievements of the most influential African-Americans in the country, conversation surrounding the massacre was heavy and too fresh to not discuss.

HipHollywood caught up with several stars that expressed their pain and condolences following the tragic news. “Barack Obama said that ‘this doesn’t happen in any other country with this kind of frequency.’ That’s an important fact to remember,” the night’s host, Arsenio Hall told us.

But aside from the recent shooting, it was the issue of gun control that also became a major discussion of the night. “I’m concerned about the pattern that we are creating in this country,” Jidenna said. “And we really need to humble ourselves and study other countries in terms of gun control right now and figure out a solution, fast.”

Grey’s Anatomy star and one of the honorees of the evening, Jesse Williams, said the fact that it’s “easier to get any kind of gun without being regulated than it is to get a driver’s license” is “ridiculous.”  He added, “Obviously look at any other country that is a high population and calls themselves developed … we see policies that work that preserve safety.”

Joining Williams in being honored and also being featured on the publication’s latest issue, the beautiful and talented, Zendaya. “It’s crazy to just be brought up in the conversation. To be around so many beautiful people who want beautiful things and are doing amazing positive things.”

By the way, Zendaya says her life has been “made” because the Ebony cover also includes Harry Belafonte.
