Exclusive: Alexandra Shipp On R. Kelly Story Line In Aaliyah Biopic: “We Are Talking About Love”

As fans anticipate the premiere of Lifetime’s forthcoming biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, questions continue to arise about how in depth the film will go regarding the late singer’s relationship with singer and producer, R. Kelly.

HipHollywood recently caught up with the film’s star, Alexandra Shipp to talk about tackling the controversial storyline. “We went pretty detailed, but to be honest with you, and any adult whose ever been in a relationship can tell you this, no one knows what goes in your relationship except you and that other person. We tackled it as much as we possibly could,” she said.

Shipp continued, “Sadly, Aaliyah has passed on and R. Kelly doesn’t want to talk about it, which is understandable. That was his relationship. For us, we obviously had to talk about it because it’s something she went through in her life and he was a huge part of her life and a huge part of her career taking off … In the beginning, R. Kelly was there for her and he wasn’t just a producer, he was a friend. So we had to show that.”

She added,”It’s nothing salacious. It’s not like there are crazy sex scenes or anything like that. This is a movie we are making about this woman’s life, not about any of that other stuff. It’s not like that all. We are talking about love.”

Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the late singer’s legal name, married R. Kelly in 1994 at the age of 15. The marriage was annulled by her parents just one year later.

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B is set to premiere on November 15 on Lifetime.

How dare she just write off pedophilia as a relationship??

“THAT was his relationship?” NOOOOO… SHE was his victim! We are talking a bout love between a 14 yr old and 27 year old…REALLY??!!!

Then this simple fame-hungry child really said he was just there for her “Until SHE took it to a whole ‘mother level?” I don’t think she understands how sexual predators work. This very rich, famous, and powerful man manipulated a young talented girl…PERIOD. Do you really believe that early 90s R.Kelly couldn’t have and find plenty of women to get to know and fall in love with!? Have she never researched this monster’s past?
