Uzo Aduba Nabs First Emmy Award

Uzo Aduba is officially an Emmy winner. During Saturday night’s Creative Arts Emmys, the actress won for best guest actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” in NetFlix’s original series, Orange is the New Black.

“I need to say thank you to the cast … I love you guys so much. I don’t know what to say, how incredibly impressed I am to be part of this show day in and day out and to feel your support constantly,” she said after Morgan Freeman presented her with the coveted award. “My sister, I don’t know a better human being. And my mother who came from Nigeria to make a better life for her family.”

While backstage in the press room, the gorgeous actress opened up about working with the show’s creator, Jenji Kohan.

“I feel so full, that’s why the tears come out … I’m stuffed. My cup runneth over right now. Mission accomplished, thank you.”

“The thing I love most about working with Jenji is her want and this burning need to tell the truth, and it doesn’t really matter the cost, what it takes to go here,” she said. “She puts that and instills that in her writing and her writers, and it’s just incredible.”

“Her heart is just mama bear for everybody on that team, not only for the art that she makes, but she wants to create a family there for us. She really does everything in her power to make sure that energy — the love and the life that’s present — stay bright, and that makes it the perfect work environment.”

Aduba also took to Instagram to share her excitement following the awards show.

“I proudly and humbly accept this honor. Thank you so very much. #creativeartsemmys #Uzoamaka #oitnb #teamorange,” she wrote.
