It’s not even Halloween and White folks are still making headlines for doing stupid stuff with blackface. The latest is Jeanne Deroo, the beauty editor of Elle France.
Ms. Deroo thought it would be smart to dress up in blackface over the weekend, and post an image of herself on Instagram. The image features the Deroo wearing an afro wig and black make up, doing what she thought would be her best Solange impersonation.
She has since deleted the image, but why she thought it was a good idea in the first place baffles our minds. Deroo did issue an apology, but ain’t nobody got time for that.
“I realise how much the fact of painting oneself brown is an offensive act. I didn’t realise the seriousness of my action when I went to a private party last Saturday evening, which the theme was ‘Icons,’ and where I chose to embody Solange Knowles, of whom I am a fan,” she said.
“During this private party, I posted a picture of myself on my Instagram without intention of hurting anyone. I deeply regret and would like to present all my apologies.”
“I would also like to indicate that this picture published in a private context does not involve in any way the french ELLE magazine I work for, and I am sorry for the prejudice it has caused,” Deroo continued.
Yawn. Save it, Jeanne.
