Lil Wayne, Jennifer Hudson, Nicki Minaj, Will Smith, Kim Kardashian and 95 more celebrities are calling on President Obama to make radical changes to the criminal justice system.
Russell Simmons presented a letter to the President on Tuesday calling for the replacement of federal jail sentences for non-violent drug related crimes, with intervention and rehabilitation programs.
“It is critical that we change both the way we think about drug laws in this country and how we generate positive solutions that leave a lasting impact on rebuilding our communities,” Simmons said, noting that the United States incarcerates more of its population than any other country in the world.
The group of celebrities are also asking Obama to form a panel to address clemency requests and support a reform allowing judges to overturn mandatory minimum sentences for relatively minor drug offenses.
